North Carolina Auto Insurance Laws: Minimum Mandatory Requirements

Required auto insurance in North Carolina:

• $30,000 for bodily injury to or death of one person
• $60,000 for bodily injury to or death of two or more persons
• $25,000 for property damage in any one accident

Liability

Liability coverage is required in North Carolina. Every state requires a certain minimum amount of liability insurance. It covers you and your passengers’ bodily injuries and property damage in the case that you are held liable for causing the accident.

Collision

The state does not require that you purchase collision coverage, although some lenders may require it. It covers damage to your vehicle.

Comprehensive

The state does not require that you purchase collision coverage, although some lenders may require it. It covers damage to your vehicle that is caused by:

• falling objects
• fire
• theft
• explosion
• earthquake
• windstorm
• hail
• water
• malicious mischief
• civil commotion
• contact with a bird or animal
• breakage of glass

Medical Payment Coverage

This is not required. It covers you and/or your passengers’ necessary and reasonable medical and funeral services.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

This is required in North Carolina. You may purchase amounts that are not less than the minimum bodily injury and property damage limits required for you vehicle.
