Montana Liability Insurance Laws (Minimum, Mandatory & Optional)

Auto Insurance Laws in Montana

Montana requires that every driver has some amount of liability insurance, also do most states. The mandatory minimum required amounts for each state can vary significantly though. Make sure you are aware of the Montana minimum auto insurance requirements before purchasing a new car insurance policy. You don’t want to be underinsured.

In brief, The Montana MINIMUM Requirements are:

• $25,000 bodily injury coverage for one person
• $50,000 for coverage of bodily injury for 2 or more people, and $10,000 property damage coverage
• $10,000 property damage coverage

Note:Liability insurance covers you against damages you cause to others if you are at fault in an accident. It does NOT protect you against your own losses.

Insurance companies must offer Uninsured Motorist coverage, but it is not a requirement that you, the consumer, purchase this coverage. Consumers may want to consider higher liability limits than the state minimum, because the minimums may not cover your exposure to lawsuits and it can get very expensive. You’ll especially want to consider purchasing additional coverage if you have a lot of assets to protect including a more expensive vehicle.

Seatbelt Laws

The “Montana Seatbelt Use Act” requires that seatbelts be worn by each person in a vehicle. Montana law also requires child safety restraint systems for children under the age of 6 who weigh less than 60 pounds.
