New Mexico Auto Insurance Laws: Minimum Mandatory Requirements

When shopping for a new auto insurance policy in New Mexico, it is extremely important to make sure your policy meets at least the minimum liability amounts required by NM, as well as any other required coverage. Required auto insurance in New Mexico:

• $25,000 for bodily injury to or death of one person
• $50,000 for bodily injury to or death of two or more persons
• $10,000 for property damage in any one accident

Consequences for Not Meeting Insurance Requirements in New Mexico

A vehicle that is not properly insured is may have its registration revoked. As written by the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department, "…an owner of an uninsured vehicle must return the vehicle registration and the license plate to the MVD within ten days of receiving the Notice of Suspension of Registration letter. If the owner does not do so, the owner will be subject to the penalties prescribed by law, including criminal penalties."
