Are cars registered or operated in Hawaii required to be covered by a liability insurance policy?

Absolutely. No person shall operate, register or maintain registration of, and no owner shall permit another person to operate, register or maintain registration of, a motor vehicle designed to be used on a public highway unless the motor vehicle is covered by a liability insurance policy.

Do I have to carry proof of liability insurance coverage in my vehicle?

Yes. If you are driving on Hawaii roads, you must have proof of insurance with you to be available if a police officer pulls you over.

Can I decline uninsured motorist coverage?

You do have the right to decline uninsured motorist coverage in writing. There are few cases where you would actually want to deny yourself that kind of coverage and it can be very costly for you if you do not have it, but it is your choice.

What happens if I do not get auto insurance coverage?

It’s against the law. You could be ticketed and fined for failing to provide proof of insurance when requested by a police officer. If your car is not insured, you will be forced to lose the car’s registration and license plates.
