What is the required coverage in Florida?
The minimum amount required for personal injury protection is $10,000. The minimum amount required for property damage liability is $10,000.
Florida’s Financial Responsibility law states that some drivers (ones convicted of specific traffic violations, ones who are involved in an accident but cannot pay for damages, or who are uninsured) carry even more.

What does personal injury protection (PIP) cover?
PIP covers you in an accident, regardless of fault. The usual coverage amount is $10,000. It pays:
- 80% of reasonable medical expenses
- 60% of lost wages
- All reasonable expenses for replacement services such as child care or housework
- Up to a $5,000 death benefit

What does property damage liability cover?
Pays for damage to property owned by others accidentally caused by you or the driver of your vehicle.
Covers property such as fences, utility poles, buildings, automobiles, etc.

What does bodily injury liability cover?
First off, it is important to note that it is an optional coverage not mandated by Florida law UNLESS you have demonstrated financial irresponsibility following a previous accident.
Bodily injury liability coverage has minimum coverage limits of $10,000 per person and $20,000 per occurrence, but higher limits are usually recommended.
